Old Bridge Museum Grand Opening!

May 24th, 2014

We're looking forward to Saturday, May 24, 2014, as we kick off the summer season at the Old Bridge in a big way! On this date will be the long awaited opening of the Museum at the Old Bridge. The Museum will officially open for visitors on Saturday, May 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Since the Old Bridge and Tender House were moved from the Intracoastal Waterway to its present site at 109 Shoreline Drive West in early 2011, OBPS volunteers have moved forward with its master plan to create a museum. Now the organization's efforts have come to fruition.

Just prior to the Tender House being moved all of the furniture, equipment, artifacts, and documents in it were removed and stored. Now the museum committee, chaired by Rose Dodds, has recreated the upstairs of the Old Bridge's Tender House. "We think people will be interested to see where the bridge tenders worked and have their first look inside the Tender House." said Dodds.

Also in the museum, there will be displays that highlight artifacts and stories of the Vesta, a Confederate blockade runner that ran aground at Bald Beach (now known as Sunset Beach) on its maiden voyage in January 1864, 150 years ago. Jean Hutchinson, executive committee member, commented "The story of the Vesta is an intriguing and fascinating piece of local history. We look forward to sharing it with our visitors."

On Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25, volunteers and former Bridge Tenders will be there to tell visitors the story of the Old Bridge, Sunset Beach and the Vesta. Please come and join us. If you can't make it to opening day, the Museum, Old Bridge, and Store will be open throughout the summer on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 5-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Check the website or call 910.363-6585 for more details.

Summer at the Old Bridge

What would summer be without events and activities at the Old Bridge? We're excited to announce our summer programs which begin the week of

June 17!

Every Tuesday from 5 - 7 p.m., A Moment in Time will be presented. Local volunteers and storytellers will share interesting stories about the history of Sunset Beach and the Old Bridge. Find out what Sunset Beach was like as it grew to what it is today. Come and learn about the escapades of the Vesta, a Civil War blockade runner, that ran aground at Sunset Beach more than 150 years ago.

Every Wednesday, from 10 - 11:30 a.m. is the

Young Explorers Program. This program is open to children of all ages. OBPS volunteers will help participants investigate the history of the Old Bridge and Sunset Beach. Children will create and take home a craft to remember their time at the Old Bridge. A snack will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This program will change throughout the summer so children can come once, twice or three times and not be bored.

Thursday nights are Family Fun Nights. Programming is varied and sure to have a topic that will catch your interest. Pirate Night, Snakes, Turtles & Birds--Oh My!, If Bridges Could Talk, and Family Fun Cookouts are some of the events we'll be having. These programs are 5 - 7 p.m. Check the website to see what fun is in store on any particular date!

On Friday, July 4, in what has come to be an annual Sunset Beach tradition, enjoy the Fourth of July at the Old Bridge. Decorate your bike or wagon and come to the Old Bridge for games, a bicycle parade and patriotic music. Check the website for details soon.

During the summer the Old Bridge, Museum, and Store will be open on Tuesday 5 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Thursday 5 - 8 p.m. All programming is weather permitting. Check the website or call 910.363.6586 for more information.

As always, our programs are free and your donations are much appreciated as they help to continue making the Old Bridge a very special place for everyone to enjoy. (There is a small charge to defray the cost of food at the cookouts.)
